Back to school tips and tricks

It’s that time of year again! Back-to-school season can be as nerve-wracking as it is exciting.  This is a huge transition period for many of us,  returning to campus after a long summer break,  and for some, it is a new start and endeavor into university.

That is an exciting thing to do but with so much happening simultaneously, it can become overwhelming to prioritize important things, leading to stress, anxiety and burnout during the academic year. Therefore, preparing before returning to school and knowing what to expect gives you an upper hand!

Here are a few tips from our team that we think will help you smoothly transition into the new school year.

When you start a new school year, sometimes it can feel awkward to make friends and navigate your new social life. Here are a few tips we think will help you meet all your besties:

Socializing and having fun with friends!

  • Be open to new ideas and open to making new friendships, ask everyone what their name is! Try not to hold yourself back based on what you know or previous experiences, university is the best time to explore your identity!

  • Join clubs and societies! Volunteering can open many doors for you, so grab the chance to join a club that excites you. You will be able to connect with like minded people which is how you will make the most valuable connections.

  • Participate in extracurriculars and attend events!  There are so many on-campus activities that occur year round. The UNBSU hosts engaging events for students from all faculties, as well as other clubs and the residences do fun stuff all year!

As the school year goes on it can become more challenging  to keep up with school work while also participating in extracurriculars and maintaining a social life. Here’s our advice when it comes to acing your academics!

Acing your academic life

  • Get a good planner! Getting into a routine for the school year will help you stay organized and not miss deadlines. It can start small with writing in all your classes and  allocating time to study.  Having this visual aid will help you remove  stress from your plate since you don’t have to hold all this information in your brain all the time, allowing you to have free time with friends and finding a work life balance.

  • Study with friends! You can book study rooms in the library to have a collaborative study session with your peers.  Studying with other people adds accountability to get your work done and it can be fun! Study rooms give you privacy to chat without disrupting others while also making studying more fun and collaborative.

  • Ask questions to your professors, and use the office hours if you have doubts understanding the course material. The office hours are set to clear your doubts and help you understand the material better. It also allows you to maintain a good relation with your professor, which is always good to maintain.

So now that you have wonderful supportive friends and are super proud of your grades its time to make sure you are also taking care of yourself. Your mental and physical wellbeing during the school year are supppppper important!

Enhance your personal life

  • Utilize the resources available to you! Campus is full of people who want to help you use the university resources to your benefit. Don’t be afraid to reach out or ask questions! UNB is able to offer on campus math support, writing support, printing resources and so much more.

  • Do the things your body needs!

  • Eat meals!  Tim Hortons in the student union building and the 50% off dominos code are great but you need good meals regularly to fuel your mind for learning!

    1. Work out regularly!  A UREC membership is included in your tuition so check out the Currie Centre.

Invest in a reusable water bottle that you can carry around with you on campus. UNB has water bottle fillers all around campus and going from class to talking all day can be tiring.

  • Lastly, Do not forget to make time for the things you enjoy out of school. Do the things that fill your cup :)

We hope these tips were helpful! Our team cannot wait for this upcoming year!
